Carry on tradition with these bilingual picture books

You probably remember grabbing a book and curling up on your mother's lap. She'd read picture books to you. Your favorite part was when she spoke in funny voices for different characters. Now you have a little niño of your own and want to carry on this tradition.

You want your baby to grow up immersed in his culture. As author Kelly Barnhill said in her Newbery Medal acceptance speech, "a story can make a lonely, anxious kid feel more than herself for just a moment." You want your child to see themselves on the page and to know that they can experience great things.

Snuggle up with your child and read to them the same way your mother read to you. Let them experience culture, learn lessons and open their eyes to other worlds. Grab a blanket and make story time with your child a memory they will cherish and love.

These bilingual picture books will give you the opportunity to speak both Spanish and English with your child:

  1. Please, Mr. Panda/Por Favor, Sr. Panda by Steve Anthony: This book is about a panda and a box of doughnuts. The book emphasizes using please and thank you, and how important it is to be polite.
  2. Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/Marisol McDonald No Combina, by Monica Brown and Sara Palacios: Marisol McDonald is a Peruvian-Scottish-American who likes things that don't typically go together. It is a story of nonconformity.
  3. Maria Had A Little Llama/ Maria TeníaUnaLlamítaby Angela Dominguez: This is a story about a girl and her llama who accompanies her at school. It takes place in Peru and highlights Peruvian traditions.
  4. BesosFor Baby: A Little Book Of Kissesby Jen Arena and Blanca Gomez: In this board book, love is the main focus. The story introduces people and terms that have to do with love.
  5. Counting Ovejas by Sarah Weeks and David Díaz: This is a bedtime story that is meant to entertain and then whisk your child off to sleep. You and your child will count sheep in both Spanish and English.
