The perks of shared parenting

Most would argue that there is no simple way of going about a divorce when children are in the picture. When tensions are high, it can be difficult to compartmentalize emotions; deciding where and with whom children stay only adds to the stress. Yet some Tennessee parents find that, with enough time and consideration, an appropriate plan can take place -- letting the ups and downs of divorce fall to the wayside.

There may never be one easy answer to this issue, but an article in The Washington Post takes a look at child custody across the nation and how it might pan out for families in the future. Using a 2014 report from 110 world experts on child custody and other areas of family development, The Post found that a large majority of professionals call for shared parenting in family law. The Post also informed readers that, according to another study, a whopping 70 percent of parents also agree with this potential change. Some experts accuse courts of having a hand in fatherless families, but as of April 2017, states such as Arizona, Kentucky and Utah had already passed shared parenting laws.

Having both parents involved in child rearing can certainly make all the difference in the child's life. Parents Magazine weighs in on the perks of joint child custody, noting that there are both right and wrong ways to go about the process. For instance, bad mouthing an ex in the presence of a child could make matters difficult down the road. Proper scheduling with the child's needs in mind is another crucial part of a successful joint custody plan; Parents urges those going through such situations to remove emotions from the picture as much as possible. Looking at a child's extracurricular activities, family schedule, child-care arrangements and other aspects of life ahead of time can also make the process easier to handle. Divorce may be a negative experience for all, but it does not have to be entirely so for children involved.
