The top five reasons couples say they got a divorce

Every marriage poses its unique challenges. Some challenges can end the relationship and eventually may lead to a divorce. So you may be wondering, what are some reasons that couples get divorced? The National Institute of Health conducted a study in 2013 where they asked couples to explain why they got a divorce.

Here are the top five reasons the couples gave to explain why their marriage failed.

  1. Lack of commitment

The report states that 94.4 percent of those surveyed cite the reason behind their divorce was a lack of commitment to the marriage. In marriages like these, one spouse may feel like their partner is not devoted to working things out which can leave problems to go unresolved.

  1. Infidelity

The second reason the couples stated their marriage ended was because one or both of the partners were unfaithful. Some partners may find themselves unable to look past infidelity and want out of the marriage altogether. Whatever the case may be, 88 percent of couples surveyed reported this as a contributing factor to the relationship’s demise.

  1. Conflict

It is natural for couples in a relationship to disagree, but constant conflict can become a significant issue in any marriage. Nearly three-quarters of the couples reported that frequent arguments and the inability to resolve disputes were contributing factors to filing for divorce.

  1. Marrying too young

Over time, each spouse’s values, goals and personality can change. Moreover, when couples tie the knot at a young age, they may not feel the same later on in the relationship as they did when they first wed. 61.1 percent of participants stated that marrying at a young age contributed to the marriage failing. The average age of the participants when they married their spouse was 23.3 years old.

  1. Finances

Unfortunately, some marriages end due to financial reasons. Finances have the potential to make or break a relationship. In those surveyed, half of them said money was one of the reasons that they decided to break it off.

Choosing to end a marriage is not always easy, but the couples surveyed said that the reasons listed above were enough to call it quits. Divorces can be emotional, but sometimes they are necessary to maintain one’s happiness.

A 20th century journalist, Helen Rowland, once said, “When two people decide to get a divorce, it isn’t a sign that they ‘don’t understand’ one another, but a sign that they have, at last, begun to.”
